PRESENTATIONS WE OFFER

Green Building Market Overview Stemming from ongoing green building economic development and market research, Light House will present Market Insights that focus on key areas of the local green building industry including commentary on emerging policies, programs and regulations. We will expand on emerging issues evolving from deep green improvements and the quest for net-zero. We will also provide feedback on Light House’s experience of working in the world of net zero and how it impacts and is impacted by regulations and therefore what municipalities need to do to help make such solutions this possible. We will also provide a snapshot of what other jurisdictions are doing to foster green buildings (and the economic benefits that result).

Net Zero homes and sustainable neighbourhoods BC is leading the country in addressing climate change through the newly adopted Climate Change Plan, with targets to reduce GHG by 33% below current levels by 2020 and to conserve energy equivalent to 50% of BC Hydro’s electricity demand growth by 2020. Buildings are a significant contributor to BC’s GHG emissions inventory – a third of BC’s total. Bringing lessons from leading-edge work in the UK and around the world, we will demystify some of the new technologies hitting the streets and provide practical illustrations through project case studies. Of specific interest to designers, specifiers and decision-makers, we will focus on low carbon strategies and technologies at the point of integration with the building: pointing to lessons learnt from the early adopters. We will also share top-line findings from the economic development activity currently underway at Light House and how it is shaping BC’s emerging sustainable building sector.

Green Building Market Insights (BC Only) Green buildings are still a niche market in BC but are growing at an incredible rate – 88% in 2006 and an average of 72% over the last five years: faster than most high technology sectors. Green buildings can significantly reduce environmental and social impacts but in doing so can generate significant market opportunities. Bringing the latest information from BC’s leading green building service providers, consumers and local industry leaders, this session will be valuable to those construction and real estate companies seeking to benefit from the economic opportunities and specifically address:
•The size and growth potential of the green building sector
•Consumer trends and demands
•How we are doing: benchmarking Vancouver against leading green cities across North America
•The economic and investment opportunities in green buildings and the penalties of ignoring the trend

Green building rating systems – LEED, Green Globes, etc Green building rating systems provide a way for developers to benchmark and “score” their buildings in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability. These rating systems are well recognized and well regarded in North America and around the world and failure to achieve certification can result in a competitive disadvantage particularly given the public and corporations increasing interest in being environmentally friendly. This session will discuss the major rating systems currently used – LEED, BuiltGreen and Green Globes -and specifically address:
• How LEED, BuiltGreen and Green Globes work
• Drawbacks of the different systems
• Choosing which rating system to use
• Latest developments in green building certification

Green building rating systems: the what, the when and the how from the contractor’s perspective LEED? BuiltGreen? UBC REAP? Which is applicable to your project? How are they similar? What are the differences? How do your products fit? To what extent does learning one give you a jumpstart on the others? The express purpose of this dynamic and interactive presentation is to help contractors and suppliers quickly get to grips with the various requirements of each system. The session will focus on practical tips and tricks to successfully bidding and building green in BC along with tales from the trenches, pitfalls and short cuts.

Renovating for Net Zero Net Zero Energy homes integrate high-performance, energy-efficient passive solar design and commercially available on-site renewable energy systems such as solar water heating, electricity and ground-source heat. They are designed to produce as much energy annually as they consume. Connected to the electricity grid, these homes draw power only as needed — and can feed excess power back into the system. In response to EQuilibrium Pilot Demonstration Initiative from CMHC, TQ Construction, in partnership with Brantwood Design and Light House Sustainable Building Centre investigate the potential for renovating a home to net zero energy consumption. The presentation discusses such strategies as solar hot water heating and passive solar design, a super-insulated building envelope and energy-efficient appliances and fixtures.

Costs and benefits of green building retrofits Targeting commercial building owners and managers, this presentation shares the findings of the 2007 report to BOMA BC on the financial impacts of their Go Green program. Couched in financial terminology familiar to building operators, the economic impacts of environmental strategies are set out in terms of cost, return on investment and asset value. The presentation offers case studies of health and environmental initiatives across a wide range of building types in order to better inform capital management processes.

Green Building for financial professionals Tailored to the needs of lending, appraising and insurance sectors, this presentation introduces the principles and benefits of green building and includes an overview of current and planned green building legislation, market drivers and trends: key areas of demand growth, the latest reading on risk assessment of green building. Participants will gain an understanding of what is being done where, based on case studies which describe value of green from the human perspective (productivity, health, tenant turnover, lease-up rates, etc). The presentation touches upon the challenge of innovation: impacts on budget, schedule, procurement and consumer demand.
