New ICI / MURB Construction Initiative
Developers Can Receive Free Energy Performance Design Assistance from Light House's New ICI / MURB Construction Initiative!
Free energy performance design assistance is available to developers of the following types of buildings in British Columbia:
- Industrial buildings including tilt-up industrial parks;
- Commercial buildings including office and retail (big box, strip malls);
- Institutional buildings including education (universities, colleges, schools) and health care ( hospitals, extended care, assisted living);
- Multi-unit residential including high-rise (reinforced concrete or steel frame) and low-rise (wood frame).
This pilot initiative is funded by the Ministry of Energy Mines and Petroleum Resources (MEMPR) and comes with endorsements by the National Association of Industrial Office Properties (NAIOP) and the Urban Development Institute (UDI).
MEMPR has set a target of achieving energy performance of 25 per cent better than the Model National Energy Code for Buildings (MNECB) for new multi-unit residential, institutional, commercial and industrial buildings by 2010, reducing the average energy consumption by 20 per cent.
Light House Sustainable Building Centre will provide:
- Free energy performance design assistance.
- Free screenings of planned buildings to identify potential energy saving opportunities.
- Free energy modeling services for those developers willing to commit to achieving MEMPR’s target.
- Assistance with access to federal, provincial, utility energy incentives programs such as CBIP, IBIP, Powersmart’s High Performance Building Program and the Terasen Gas Efficient Boiler Program.
To fully benefit from federal, provincial and utility energy incentive programs, the building should confirm the following criteria:
- Energy performance has to be 25per cent better than the MNECB.
- Part of ICI / MURB building sector.
- Conditioned space larger than 50,000 ft2.
- Satisfaction of the MNECBs mandatory requirements.
- CBIP incentive applications must submitted by December 1, 2006.
Upon completion of the program, Light House Sustainable Building Centre will evaluate uptake and market trends and compile a report on top line findings. This report will be used to develop a business plan to extend the pilot phase through to 2010.
