I am looking for an environmentally friendly kitchen cabinets.
Submitted by daniellew on Sun, 19/08/2007 - 10:54.I would suggest birch, bamboo, and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood. FSC certified wood is sustainably harvested according to strict forest management guidelines. You can also get a range of FSC veneers such as maple, edge grain fir and farmed cherry.
Check out MoCo Sustainable Connections for more information on environmentally-froendly wood sources: www.mocosustain.com.
Francis Lemieux does quite cheap and custom-made cabinets with strawboard with FSC-certified veneers.

What is the smell that comes off MDF, and is it toxic? Can I get non-toxic MDF?
Submitted by daniellew on Sun, 19/08/2007 - 10:50.The glue in MDF contains Urea Formaldehyde, which is highly toxic.
There is a company in New Zealand that makes non-toxic MDF. MoCo Sustainable Connections in Vancouver, http://www.mocosustain.com/, can give you more information.

What's up with the blue stained pine?
Submitted by daniellew on Sun, 19/08/2007 - 10:43.The blue stain you see in some pine is a result of the mountain pine beetle (MPB). Spores of "bluestain fungi" contaminate the bodies of adult beetles and are introduced into the tree during attack. The fungi give a blue-gray appearance to the wood. Comprehensive testing has shown that the blue stain has no impact on strength.
