“It’s like the gun went off, and everyone was racing towards green, but then I heard the second shot, signaling a false start.” Norm Taylor Vice President Collier’s Client Representation Group, Light House Market Insights Forum, UBC, January 2009

The world is focused on financial meltdown and solutions to keep us from falling into a protracted recession. BC lost 7,000 jobs in the construction sector in January alone, and high profile projects have stalled due to lack of credit. The IMF estimates that the effect of financial downturn has already amounted to a 4.5% reduction in global GDP.

At the same time, the economic effect of climate change is estimated to reach a 10% reduction in world GDP unless appropriate policy is implemented. The Canadian National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy reports that, in the absence of any intervention, carbon emissions from Canada’s commercial buildings alone are set to grow to 207% above 2008 levels by 2050.

This quarter, Light House Sustainable Building Centre teams up with the Vancouver Regional Construction Association to focus on the solutions on offer to the construction sector in the 2009 election. We have invited a special guest panel to discuss the platforms of BC's political parties, specifically how they are addressing the concerns of the construction industry.

Panelists will discuss:

* How their policies will support jobs and growth in the real estate and construction sector
* How policy will help BC reclaim its leadership position in green building services and technologies
* Discuss the impacts of climate change mitigation/adaptation policy on the real estate and construction sector
* Share their vision of a sustainable real estate and construction industry

Join us for a first class discussion of policies of relevance to our industry and hear what solutions are tabled for economic and environmental progress.

Our Panelists are:
Shane Simpson, Environment Critic for the NDP and MLA for Vancouver-Hastings
Damian Kettlewell, Deputy Leader of the Green Party and MLA for Vancouver-False Creek
Marc McPherson, Department Head at BuildDirect.com representing the BC Conservatives
Keith Sashaw, President of Vancouver Regional Construction Association.
Liberal Platform to be confirmed
