Heating / Cooling Systems

A ‘high performance' building envelope will keep heat inside in the winter and outside in the summer thereby reducing the required heating and cooling capacities and capital costs of the conventional and /or alternative HVAC systems. HVAC systems, whether conventional or alternative, can't be eliminated completely because human comfort must be maintained.  The American Associa

Welcome to the Energy Systems Portal

If you are planning a new building you are invited to use the table of contents at the left to explore our new energy portal. It contains current information regarding both energy efficiency and sustainable design features that will result in a building that has a reduced ecological footprint and provides significant benefits for occupant well-being and productivity.

On Site Energy Generation

Many green buildings include some onsite energy generation, most commonly thermal solar collectors to heat water and / or photovoltaic (PV) panels to generate electricity.

Ventilation

Displacement ventilation is a technique used in many green buildings. Air is not recirculated or mixed. Instead it is introduced near the floor before gradually migrating upward to exhaust vents near the ceiling. This ‘stack effect' is optimized through careful design.  An exhaust fan is often included to provide accurate control of the ventilation rate.
