Cob is a building material consisting of clay, sand, water and earth that has been used for construction since early home building. It creates ideal structures as cob is fireproof, resistant to seismic activity and inexpensive. Cob building has seen a revival in recent years by the natural building and sustainability movement. The materials used in cob building are local, long-lasting, no-toxic low impact. It’s easy for anyone to learn cob building. It promotes community by building together. This workshop is an introduction only.

Topics:
Introduction to philosophy and history of cob
and other natural building methods
Advantages of building with earth in general
Essential aspects of building, sculpting and finishing cob

Permaculture is a way of designing gardens and food production landscapes for humans that work with the principles of nature rather than against them, it is based on thoughtful, lengthy observation, of looking at systems such as forests in all their functions and allowing the systems to follow their natural evolution. It takes into account basic human needs such as food, water, and energy and weaves landscape elements together in was that reduce work, eliminate pollution and sustainably address local needs. It helps humans fit into natural work better than conventional exploitative methods. It blends ethics, principles of cooperation and common sense.

Topics:
 Permaculture design principles and process
 Observation and landscape analysis
 Climatic factors
 Soil building
 Food forests and plant guides
Organic food production and food security
 Water: harvesting, conservation and management
(including rain catchment methods, greater recycling and composting toilets)
 Mapping and design exercises

Wind Effects on Buildings

Apr 21 2008 - 9:00am
Apr 23 2008 - 9:59am

Wind engineering applications form an integral part of the building design
process, providing architects and design engineers with a comprehensive
understanding of the interaction between environmental factors and building
design. A proper connotation of this interaction can provide significant cost
savings to building owners in terms of developmental, material, and operational
costs.Wind engineering examines the impact of wind force on a building in terms
of wind pressures on a building’s exterior shell; its torsional movement; door
