Life Sciences Centre
The Life Sciences Centre at the University of BC is the largest building in Canada to achieve LEED Gold certification.
Designed by Diamond and Schmitt Architects, Toronto, and Bunting Coady Architects, Vancouver, the $125 million Centre accommodates the interdisciplinary research facility (Life Sciences Institute) and a
significant proportion of BC’s medical education program.
Lab buildings use more energy than most other types of buildings, yet the Centre performs 25% better than a similar UBC building. This translates to yearly savings of 5.5 million kWh and nearly $200,000. Recycled content makes up at least 10% of the total value of materials used and 80% of construction waste was recycled or salvaged. Water consumption was reduced by 50%.
