Gulf Islands Operations Centre
Gulf Islands National Park Reserve Operations Centre is located in Sidney, BC. Designed by Larry McFarland Architects, the project set out to minimize the building’s dependence on outside sources of energy and to lessen its impact on the environment.
The many sustainable features include:
- 108,000 liters of rainwater collected for flushing toilets, reducing water consumption by 60%
- Energy performance to be 75% better than code
- Ocean based geothermal system with radiant heating and cooling
- Photovoltaics to provide 20% of energy needs
- Low VOC materials and natural ventilation
- Recycled material in the building exceeds 27% of total material costs
