Where do we start??

My husband and I are in the process of buying a parcel of wooded land that eventually we will break and develop into our weekend getaway. The home we plan to build will be small (approx 1000 sqft) and sustainable; we also want to do all the work ourselves. We live in a small northern rural town in Alberta.
My question is......Do we need to obtain a building permit to do this??
