How will metro Vancouver fare in a low energy future?
Vancouver Peak Oil Executive introduces itself with a screening of The End of Suburbia
VANCOUVER (March 25, 2008) — The Vancouver Peak Oil Executive (VPOE) - http://vancouverpeakoil.org will present a screening of The End of Suburbia on Friday, April 11th at 7:30pm at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, located at 154 East 10th Avenue. The film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring members of the newly formed VPOE.
In his film The End of Suburbia, Gregory Greene questions prospects for our society, transportation and economy as global demand for fossil fuels begins to exceed supply. The film was the first to introduce thousands of viewers to the looming challenges of peak oil and helped spawn an international movement of citizens’ groups dedicated to relocalization. Relocalization strives to build greater community resiliency by self-reliance in energy, food, and economic matters.
“Oil at $110 a barrel is already affecting trade, currency, the stock market, causing wars and potential wars, leading to blackouts all over the world, food shortages and deforestation in the race to make biofuel substitutes--it’s even affecting people’s capacity to drive to work and still afford to eat lunch,” explains John Cooksey, VPOE member and organizer.
“But oil, for what it does, would be underpriced at $1,000 a barrel, and we’re going to be exploring how high the price can go in the next few years. We’ve got to get ready for that, or we’re going to get hit by a different kind of tsunami way before ocean levels start to rise.”
The screening of The End of Suburbia will serve as an introduction to the concepts that led to the formation of the VPOE and will be followed by a lively discussion about what Vancouver needs to do to begin making proactive risk-management decisions in dealing with a new energy reality.
About VPOE
VPOE is a working group of concerned Vancouver citizens with a broad range of expertise focused on building awareness of the imminent peak oil challenges and its potential effects on the metro Vancouver area. Their ultimate goal, in collaboration with NGO’s, foundations, citizens' groups and the media, is to build a set of cross-disciplinary solutions--tailored to the strengths and vulnerabilities of the metro area--that will help the people of Vancouver make the transition into a relocalized lifestyle that isn’t overly dependent on fossil fuel inputs, in the relatively short time frame that depleting energy supplies may dictate.
About The End of Suburbia
But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary.
The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Oil Peak mean for North America? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia?
