Sustainable Communities - Technical and Policy Advisor (Vancouver)

The Pembina Institute is seeking a motivated and skilled professional to assist communities in their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conventional energy consumption, and energy costs.

The position will be based in our Vancouver office and includes travel throughout the province and possibly in other regions in Canada.

Key responsibilities of this work include:

- Working with local governments and First Nations communities to develop energy plans and implement policies and initiatives identified in energy plans;

- Identifying, assessing and quantifying renewable energy, energy efficiency, and greenhouse gas reduction opportunities (including technical, financial, business and policy assessments);

- Collecting data and deriving inventories of community energy use, energy expenditures, and greenhouse gas emissions;

- Researching and analyzing federal, provincial, territorial and municipal policies related to energyand climate;

- Identifying barriers and assessing opportunities to improve energy efficiency and increase the use of renewable energy and local energy projects;

- Promoting the adoption of new policies to advance sustainable energy in Canada through a variety of means such as consulting, engaging with decision makers, allies and media, and participating or facilitating multi-stakeholder processes; and

- Effectively communicating the results of Pembina's work though reports, presentations, and media (releases, op-eds, interviews).

Qualifications

Successful candidates will have an educational and / or work background in engineering, environmental studies, natural resource science, or economics, where a significant level of comfort with quantitative analysis has been developed.

The following skills and characteristics will be beneficial:

- A strong personal commitment to protecting the environment;

- Familiarity with energy-related environmental issues;

- Awareness of barriers and opportunities for local government to implement sustainable energy solutions;

- Familiarity with renewable energy and energy efficiency applications and technologies;

- An understanding of barriers to the implementation of energy efficiency and renewable energy;

- An energetic and self-directed personality, with effective time management skills;

- The ability to address multiple projects and demands effectively while remaining focused on delivering on priority tasks;

- The ability to work independently;

- The ability to quickly absorb, synthesize, and act on new information and concepts;

- Strong research and writing skills;

- Good presentation and public speaking skills;

- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, and Power Point; and

- Excellent interpersonal and group communication skills, and a proactive approach to managing work tensions and stresses that may arise.

The following types of experience would also be an asset:

- Experience working or living in First Nation and/or remote communities;

- Experience working or volunteering with an environment or conservation focused not for profit public interest body;

- Experience with integrated sustainability community planning principles; and

- Experience in consensus-based and multi-stakeholder processes.

Terms of employment

- Compensation is competitive with established non-profit organizations and will be based on skills, experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

- A generous benefits (including RRSP program) package.

- Four weeks of paid vacation each year. Standard for all staff.

- Statutory holidays plus the days between Christmas and New Years are paid days off.

This position will report to the Director of the Sustainable Communities Group. The initial term of employment is for twelve months with an anticipated extension to permanent employment. Further terms of employment will be discussed with candidates during the interview process. The position is anticipated to begin work in mid-2008.
