Radiant Floor Heating

I am installing a Radiant Floor/Ceiling heating system into a hundred year old home in Strathcona.  I would like to connect with other home owners that have gone through the learning curve. I will be running the PEX myself but am looking for some friendly advice.

Thanks

As the popularity of

As the popularity of infrared saunas gain in our modern culture, many questions arise about the technology behind them. How do they work? Are they expensive? And most importantly, are infrared saunas dangerous? This question comes up most often when discussing the issue of far infrared sauna technology. However, one must understand how an infrared sauna works before understanding the potential dangers it may have. The heaters that are installed in an infrared sauna are special heaters that use a single type of light called FIR to heat the body. FIR, or infrared light, uses the infrared part of spectrum.

As bitterly cold it is right

As bitterly cold it is right now in Europe and North America homes require powerful heating systems to fight the cold. Certainly heating systems cause emissions, but installing a heat pump provides an opportunity to reduce carbon emissions, save on fuel and provide a sustainable solution. Use the right air source heat pumps and witness a drop in fuel bills and better heating experience.

Do you know are there

Do you know are there infrared garage heaters? And where can I buy it?

The best heating system a

The best heating system a house can have is the one you don't realize is there. No radiators clanking in the night. No vents whooshing like a jet preparing for takeoff. No dust-spewing ductwork to run up your allergists' bills. Just an even blanket of heat, right where you want it.

That's the appeal of radiant floor heating, says This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, who has long been a fan. "It's truly invisible," he says. But a radiant floor system has more than just aesthetics going for it. It's also a highly efficient way to heat a house, increasing comfort as it reduces energy costs...

The boiler should be piped

The boiler should be piped primary/secondary, then hte 40' doesn't matter.
Next, you need to know how much heat your current set up really needs, to determine if the boiler can handle the increased load.

You need to do a load calc on the addition to see how much heat it needs, to know if you can get enough radiant heat to heat it.

Your radiant supply should be able to determine what water temp you need, and if you need a second source of heat for design conditions.

Sometimes nice decision is to use infrared heaters instead of Floor/Ceiling heating system in some rooms.

Do not try and use temp set back with a radiant system.

Thanks for the question...

Thanks for the question. For some basic background on radiant floor heating, the Oregon Department of Energy has a nice overview article here, and "Hometips" has a good practical write-up here. If you are keen to share stories with other homeowners, Heathly Heating has a forum solely dedicated to "radiant based HVAC systems and building science."

I have sent it out to a few of the listserves that I am on, one of which has some useful discussion archived here.

I have also sent it out to some of the contractors in the SBC network. I'll let you know what response I get.

Below is a picture from your neighbourhood on our shared picture file - please do feel free to add pictures of your home in Strathcona.

Thanks very much for you response and suggestions, Jessica.  All very appreciated.
