Project Description

Changing Climate, Changing Basin: A Community Based Planning and Action
Initiative will work with selected   communities, within the CBT area,
to assist them in identifying local community sensitivities to climate
change and its impacts, and then develop and implement a proactive
adaptation plan to meet these challenges. The project is being initiated
by the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) in partnership with a variety of
provincial, federal, first nation, and regional government agencies, and
academic institutions. The project will be guided by a multi-stakeholder
Advisory Committee (this group has already been convened). The project
will build on existing climate change work in the Columbia Basin by
supporting existing activities and facilitating new initiatives.

Key elements of the project include:
- Regional workshops to introduce the project to communities, and
describe similar initiatives from other communities across North
America.
- Creation of community engagement teams made up of people from academic
institutions and government agencies, with a variety of community
engagement and climate change expertise, to work with individual
communities to develop adaptation strategies.
- Invitation for communities to participate in the project and selection
of a maximum of four communities to participate.
- Selected community workshops to identify local climate change impacts,
sensitivities, prioritize sensitivities, and develop adaptation plans
related to the priorities.
- A regional workshop to share what was learned from the community
projects.

Position Description

The Project Coordinator for the Changing Climate, Changing Basin project
will work closely with the Project Advisory Committee, the project
assistant and other project partners. Under the direction of Kindy
Gosal, CBT Manager of Water Initiatives, and the Chair for the Project
Advisory Committee, the Coordinator will be responsible for the overall
coordination and management of the project, such as, but not limited to:
-Organizing advisory committee meetings
- Coordinating the participation of project partners (including engaging
additional partners as required)
- Managing budgets and seeking out additional funding as required
- Supervising the work of the project assistant
- Developing draft and final project work plans and associated budgets
- Overseeing the implementation of the work plan as required and
reporting on the work plan to the advisory committee
- Managing advertising and media inquiries
- Coordinating and managing all regional, sub regional, and community
workshops as required
- Providing support and coordination for the community engagement teams
- Coordinating with selected local governments, participant communities,
climate change specialists, implementation teams, and others.

Qualifications

- Post-secondary education in an environmental management, planning or
community development field.

Skills and Experience

- Proven project management abilities in projects of this size and
scope.
- Proven ability to successfully coordinate an integrated project
working with multiple interests and organizations.
- Experience working with local governments in the Columbia Basin.
- Experience with rural community engagement and facilitation.
- Fund raising, budgeting, and financial management experience.
- Broad knowledge in the field of climate change (impacts,
sensitivities, adaptation, and mitigation).
- Media/communications skills and/or training.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work with little or no supervision.

Additional

- This position is a contract position with a term of one year starting
September 15, 2007 to September 15, 2008.
- Approximately 30 hours per week is required.
- The contractor must provide their own office space and equipment ,as
well as WCB, vehicle and comprehensive general liability insurance.
- Location of the successful candidate can be anywhere in the Canadian
portion of the Columbia Basin (as defined by the CBT Act).
- Individuals with a broad knowledge of Basin Communities preferred.
- The contractor will be required to travel. Separate travel budgets
will be provided at CBT per diem travel rates.
