Experts in the Ecology of Real Estate

The Green Realty Association (GRA) has been formed to train, certify, and represent Green Realtors and related professionals such as mortgage brokers, notaries, etc, as experts in the ecology of real estate.

Realtors are often a primary point of contact for people exploring their housing and community needs. As green home experts, these professionals are knowledgeable and current in their understanding of greener building practices (including energy efficiency, water-saving measures, sustainable building materials, healthy homes, etc) and ‘greenconsumer’ needs. They are able to assess a client’s needs and the greenness (present and potential) of properties and communities.

Green Realtors are also able to provide insight regarding immediate environmentrelated home problems such as dealing with lead, mould, or buried oil tanks. As well, a Green Realtor can assist in green site and property planning - How does one manage their property including trees, water frontage, gardens, etc in an environmentally responsible manner? A Green Realtor can provide context for such decisions by sharing their awareness of broader community and land-use issues such as zoning, protective covenants, and affordable housing.

Beyond it’s role as an educator and green certifier of realtors, GRA utilizes its expertise and influence to promote the greening of the real estate industry such as campaigning for green changes to the MLS system. The Association furthers it’s presence by advancing awareness of green real estate practices to the general public through information booths, public speaking engagements, and various media.
