I am looking for flooring for a community centre that will be used for both athletic purposes and social events.

There are a few types of flooring I would recommend for your community centre:

1) The flooring we have at our own centre is called “Sport Mat” recycled rubber flooring and is made by Dinoflex Mfg. in Salmon Arm, BC. As I mentioned, it is 80% used car tires and 20% recycled rubber flooring. It comes in a variety of colours and is ideal for athletic purposes. It is also attractive, and works for more formal events. Another great feature is that it comes in tiles, although you don’t notice this when it is installed. If a tile is damaged, you can simply flip it over to repair it! The only thing I would warn you about is that when we had it installed, the flooring off-gassed for a while (smelled like tires). This lasted a couple of months, and we managed it by opening the windows regularly. It wasn’t a major problem, but it is something you should be aware of when purchasing this flooring.

2) The cork flooring we have in our product library is called “Mediterranean Cork Flooring” and is available from Burritt Bros. Carpets. It comes in a variety of colours as well.

3) Another type of flooring you might try is Marmoleum, which is a type of natural linoleum. It again comes in a variety of different colours and textures.

We also have wood flooring options, but I am not sure they would be suited for athletic use or not. You would have to check with the manufacturers themselves:

4) Bamboo flooring is very attractive, and bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource (it grows about 5x faster than most other forests).

5) FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood is produced from sustainably managed forests.
