I would suggest birch, bamboo, and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood. FSC certified wood is sustainably harvested according to strict forest management guidelines. You can also get a range of FSC veneers such as maple, edge grain fir and farmed cherry.

Francis Lemieux does quite cheap and custom-made cabinets with strawboard with FSC-certified veneers.
