Hub for Action on School Transportation Emissions (HASTE) Career Opportunity
We are currently seeking a full-time Program Manager for the Hub for Action on School Transportation Emissions (HASTE).
HASTE, launching September 2008, is a centre of excellence, developed to assist teachers, school administrators, students and parent groups in B.C. schools with efforts to reduce transport emissions generated by travel to and from school.
HASTE is:
* A central reserve (predominantly web-based) of resources for organizations developing and implementing school and classroom emissions reduction campaigns;
* A coordinating body for identifying and promoting resources and facilitating coordination between non-profit program delivery organizations, municipalities, provincial and federal government departments and the school community;
* A sharing and celebration of results;
* A provider of program participation funding;
* An emissions calculation and tracking tool; and
* A workshop provider.
HASTE is a collaborative project, initiated by the B.C. Ministries of Environment and Transportation, with support from the B.C. Ministries of Education and Health, the Climate Action Secretariat, and Environment Canada. Passion for Action, with support from the Fraser Basin Council, was contracted to facilitate engagement among stakeholders in order to develop and implement a framework strategy for reducing school-related transportation emissions. Now ready for operation, HASTE is being managed through the Environmental Education Action Program Society with guidance provided by a multi-stakeholder advisory council with representatives from the NGO, school community and supporting government agencies.
The Program Manager will be driving force of the HASTE program in B.C. and will:
* Promote resources across the province to school districts, student environmental clubs, Parent Advisory Councils, and green teacher associations;
* Maintain HASTE web resources;
* Liaise with non-profit groups who provide classroom and school campaign programs to support the alignment of their programs with HASTE goals;
* Promote, coordinate and deliver ‘ how to plan and implement an emissions reduction program’ workshops, in person and on-line;
* Develop unique marketing campaigns to promote HASTE message targeted to diverse audiences, parent, students, teachers;
* Liaise with the various supportive government departments who are providing funding for HASTE to ensure continued support;
* Establish partnerships in all media sectors to support the launch and celebrate successes of the program; and
* Evaluate the program after its first year, including compiling and reporting on statistics regarding the initiative.
This contract position will start in mid July and is funded though to March 31st 2009. Continuation of role is dependent upon funding.
Desired background:
* Prior experience working with non-profit organizations, the school community and government;
* Experience managing a non-profit organization;
* Project management experience ;

* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
* Proven ability to develop and maintain effective cooperative relationships;
* High degree of administrative skills and resourcefulness;
* Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, Excel, internet, email);
* Flexibility and adaptability;
* Strong organizational and problem solving skills;
* Effective time-management, ability to work from home;
University degree in Environment, Recreation, Physical Education, Health Promotion, Public Health or related degree.
