Director of Technical Services

About the position

Light House Sustainable is poised for further growth and seeks a committed, motivated, and creative professional to join the leadership team as Director of Technical Services. This position will be responsible for developing Light House!s mission-based consulting, technical assistance and research projects. Light House is a professional, entrepreneurial organization focused on helping BC!s real estate and construction industries embrace sustainable practices.

As the successful candidate you will have a minimum of 5 years experience in green building services, developing business opportunities and managing projects.

Ideally you have functioned successfully at the decision-making level within a professional services company (architectural, engineering, development, etc). You have brought in new work, delivered projects on time and on budget, worked alongside clients and have experience in managing teams.

You work in close partnership with the Executive Director to oversee strategic planning, program development, fundraising and operations. It is a senior position suited to an individual who is a "grounded entrepreneur! – that is, a person who is able to create and respond to opportunities yet understands the importance of prudent fiscal planning and management. You are:

• An entrepreneurial leader. You are comfortable making decisions, you think ahead and you are always on the look-out for opportunities
• A graduate in engineering, architecture, development, construction or related discipline with at least five years work experience in the field
• Equipped with practical experience of BC-specific green building certification/documentation programs (LEED, REAP, etc);
• Familiar with the principles of energy efficiency, energy modeling processes and outputs in both residential and non-residential building types
• A strong communicator and at home in within business networking circles;
• A meticulous organizer yet enjoy multi-tasking;
• Strong on supervisory skills with the ability to delegate tasks to a work team and ensure that project deadlines are met.

Duties and responsibilities:

Your responsibilities are to lead the Light House research and consulting teams and to work with the Executive Director in the development of strategic direction and in meeting corporate objectives. You will:

• Undertake strategic operational and organizational planning and development, including business planning for our consulting work and program development for our core non-profit operations.
• Be responsible for business development and project management of the research, policy and consulting projects.
• Meet economic and financial targets associated with Light House!s technical services
• Manage and mentor staff that report to this position and, indirectly, volunteers and interns and specifically, be responsible for the productivity and professional well-being of your project team
• Maintain and nurture client relations (e.g. property owners, developers and other members of BC's consulting and construction industry)
• Contribute to and assist in implementing our mission, vision and strategic plan
• Liaise with and provide support to Light House staff, Leadership Team and Board
• Provide strategic leadership for the development and growth of key partnerships with industry organizations, associations and others.
• Provide input into Light House!s non-technical green building programs (e.g. outreach, volunteer and resource centre programs) and the website.
• You will work with the Executive Director to nurture and develop Light House!s leadership team.
• You report to the Executive Director

This is a full-time, permanent position. A competitive salary and benefits package will be offered.

Through direct project involvement, we work hand in hand with the real estate and construction professionals to implement green solutions in a wide range of projects. Our mission is to enable BC to become a centre of excellence in green building design and construction.

To do this, we offer education, training and outreach to industry and the public in order to foster a deeper commitment to sustainable building practices. We help to advance public sector programs and initiatives through research, development and implementation of tools and resources optimized for the British Columbian construction and real estate industries. As a social enterprise, we realise our goals through both fund-raising and the revenues from our fee-for-service operations. Founded in November 2005, Light House currently retains 12 professional and passionate staff and is powered by the energy and enthusiasm of 20 interns and over 50 volunteers.
