Community Developer - Surrey Association of Sustainable Communities (Surrey ASC)

The Surrey Association of Sustainable Communities (Surrey ASC) is an umbrella group for community associations and groups in Surrey.  Its purpose is to further the livability and sustainability of communities in Surrey.  Please visit www.surreyasc.com for further information about Surrey ASC.

As a result of a grant from the United Way, Surrey ASC is inviting proposals from qualified consultants/contractors to undertake community development work in Surrey for approximately a six month period. It is anticipated that the work would average about 2 days per week.  This contract is worth a maximum of $10,000.

Project scope

The scope of the project is to: 1.         Encourage the formation of community groups and expansion of existing groups to work cooperatively with other organizations in enhancing the quality of life in communities and neighbourhoods of Surrey. This would involve contacting and liaising with other organizations, meeting and encouraging residents, mapping community assets, arranging partnerships, keeping records, and monitoring progress. 2.         As funding permits, arrange workshops and public meetings to further the goals of Surrey ASC. 3.         Apply to appropriate foundations and funding sources for additional grants to support the work and possibly lead to further contracts for a community developer.  Qualifications and Experience The following are required: 1.  Experience as a community developer, including community asset and capacity building. 2.  Appropriate qualifications to be a community developer.3.  Experience in fund-raising, including writing grant applications.4.   Knowledge of sustainability principles and measures.4.  The ability to be a self-starter, providing own work space, computer, and any equipment and office supplies needed to carry out the project.5.   No other commitments that might conflict with the goals and objectives of Surrey ASC.5.   Ability to work flexible hours.6.   Valid BC Driver’s Licence and use of a vehicle.7.   Any insurance, permits, and licences needed to carry out the project. 

In addition, knowledge of and involvement in Surrey’s communities would be an asset.

Deliverables

1.  A report outlining activities and outcomes of the project.2.  An increased sense of community pride and involvement in neighbourhoods in Surrey.3.   An increased number of community groups and/or activities of existing groups in Surrey.4.  An increase in supportive responses by governments to communities’ activities and concerns in Surrey.5.   Additional funding to provide for further contracts for a community developer. Timing It is anticipated that the contract would start in November, 2008, and be completed by the end of April, 2009.
