CIEEDAC is looking for a Technical Support/ Research Associate

CIEEDAC (The Canadian Industrial Energy End-Use Data and
Analysis Centre) is dedicated to improving the quality and accessibility of
practical and unbiased information related to energy use in Canadian
Industry. It is a government and
industry-funded centre housed in the Energy and Materials Research Group in the

Position Tasks include:
1. Support and write CIEEDAC Annual reports about GHG and
energy trends, for various industries.
2. Lead and manage programmers to complete custom projects
for CIEEDAC, check and improve their work.
3. Perform data management and research to support CIEEDAC
Annual reports. Develop and maintain the following throughout the year:
   Cogeneration Annual Survey /
Database
   Renewable Energy Facility Annual
Survey / Database
  
CIEEDAC NAICS database - Industry
Energy and GHG database
  
Database of the inventory of
Industrial Databases
4. Maintain, program, and develop data Archives
5. Maintain, program, and develop websites
6. Maintain webserver: MySQL / PHP; Apache;Backup data and webfiles

Customer service:
Answer external CIEEDAC queries and provide custom datasets.

Other tasks:
Technical support for office applications, Adobe PDF, the
scanner, printer, operating system; support students in macro programming, help
Noory out with Technical tasks.

Data mining:
Write programs to automatically mine data from the internet
from time to time for research purposes.


Skill Requirements

Soft skills: Ability to multitask and prioritize multiple
tasks with competing time constraints.
Statistical Background
Writing
Data manipulation
Data analysis (GHG, Energy, etc.... the stuff on our annual
reports)
Database queries (To pull out data in nested queries for our
annual reports)
Microsoft Office Applications and Programming for
Applications (Excel, Access)

Customer service / client service.
Understand survey design and implementation. Understand
student and academic needs - how to design dynamic, intelligent online surveys
to answer specific questions and modeling problems.
Knowledge of GHG/Energy/Climate change science and data, and
how these are obtained.
Good knowledge of the software development process.
Ability to formulate logical programming test plans.

Technical Skills:
Website frontend:
Dreamweaver in coding dynamic websites
Photoshop / picture editing


Website Backend:

Programming (Minimum 3 years experience, preferably 5):
PHP, Javascript, MySQL, Visual Basic, Visual Basic for
Applications, CSS
Content management systems: Phpwebsite
(http://phpwebsite.appstate.edu/) and Drupal (http://drupal.org/). Navicat.
Installation, configuration, and troubleshooting at base
level - editing the config files manually. (Minimum 3 years experience,
preferably 5):
Apache webserver , PHP, Windows XP Pro

Networking:
Good Knowledge of Network infrastructure;
Minimum 3 years experience, A+ Certified strongly
recommended. Preferably 5 years experience and MCSA certified (or going to get
certification or equivalent experience)
Need to be able to quickly troubleshoot with the ACS /
Applied science network managers and get problems resolved quickly. Ie. know
the technical terms like "A-Record" , "ports", and have a troubleshooting plan
implemented before calling on the managers for further help.
Reconfigure webserver to work from a different location at
SFU if necessary
System restore and recovery
Network security and router configuration.
