BC Hydro is providing an opportunity for students interested in exploring different trades, technical careers or hands-on work through its Youth Hires Program (YH).  As part of our Strategic Workforce Planning initiative, the YH Program reinforces BC Hydro's commitment to skilled workforce renewal by raising the profile of skilled trades and technical occupations. 

The program's goals are to provide students exposure to trades and technical occupations and, through work activities, show students that trades and technical occupations are a desirable career choice. As a result, we expect the students will decide to further their trades or technical-related education, including meeting or exceeding the BC Hydro apprenticeships' or technical program pre-requisites. The YH program provides summer employment in the trades and technical occupations to students who are making the transition from school to work. We are looking for people who believe in safety, teamwork, service, integrity and accountability, have the ability to apply their skills and knowledge to physical work problems, and are seriously thinking of an apprenticeship or technical training as a means to get their career going.  This program has evolved into a path to draw individuals into our technical, pre-apprentice and apprentice programs.

DUTIES: The successful candidate will:
> Always put safety first. 
> Perform simple technical or trade-related tasks as assigned by the appropriate BC Hydro employee. 
> Work with BC Hydro manager to obtain to explore other technical or trade exposure. 
> Model BC Hydro core values.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidates will have:
> Interest in learning more about a career in the trades or technical field
and potential opportunities within BC Hydro.   
> Graduation from high school with English 12, Math 11 and Science 11 (Physics
preferred).   
> A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License (preferred)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The successful candidate will:
> Gain valuable exposure to trades and technical occupations, such as Power Line Technician, Electrician, Meter Technician, Cable Splicer, Mechanic, Communication  Protection and Control Technologist, Fleet Mechanic, and Partsperson. OR
> Gain valuable exposure to technical occupations, such as Drafter, Electric Services Coordinator, Service & Design Assistant, Inspector, Design Technician, Design Representative or Vegetation Maintenance.
> Gain insight to technical career options, pre-apprenticeships and apprenticeships programs as a means to start a career with BC Hydro. 
> Be encouraged to further technical or trades/occupations related education by enrolling in post-secondary technical or pre-apprenticeship training.

This position involves traveling to the Lower Mainland for training on July 6th. Training will be held on July 7th to 11th  2008 (inclusive). Start date in the appropriate geographic location will be July 14th 2008.

Locations of work include: Northern B.C., South Central B.C., Fraser Valley, Lower Mainland/Sea-to-Sky, Vancouver Island, B.C. Coastal Region, Columbia Basin Region, Peace River Region, Burrard Generation (Fort Nelson, Burrard GS).
