Position Title: Coordinator - Sustainability

Number of Positions: One

Duration: Continuous

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 35 Hours per week

Pay Group: $2,497.60 bi-weekly, Pay Grade 15 (under review)

DEPARTMENT: Sustainability

POSITION FUNCTION

Co-ordinate, review and evaluate various initiatives to ensure an integrated approach to social, economic and environmental sustainability at the City of Victoria.

KEY DUTIES

Work with City departments to develop and promote sustainable policies and practises; provide guidance and support in areas such as implementation and evaluation of sustainability initiatives.

Act as a liaison between departments to ensure coordination between sustainability initiatives.

Maintain working knowledge of sustainability best practises; conduct workshops and/or training sessions to educate City staff on sustainability concepts.

Develop assessment criteria, monitor and evaluate programs, document performance trends, and recommend and implement modifications to improve program effectiveness; liaise with departments to address gaps and provide support in the development of new policies and programs. Address obstacles and barriers to enable the success of the City’s sustainability initiatives. Assist in the development of goals, performance metrics and long range strategy for sustainability at the City.

Represent the department and participate on various community and City committees; prepare and present a variety of correspondence and reports with recommendations to staff and Council and implement recommendations as directed; draft policy and compile data and statistics related to sustainability initiatives. Provide education and promote the City’s sustainable practises to the local community and encourage involvement.

Respond to inquiries and provide advice to staff, the public and outside agencies relating to specific City sustainability initiatives.

Perform related duties where qualified.

INDEPENDENCE

Work is generated by departmental work programs, requests from Council or the public, or assigned by supervisor.

Work is reviewed through discussions with supervisor and department meetings.

New initiatives, major projects and policies are discussed with supervisor with recommendations.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort:

Normal.

Mental Effort:

Meet multiple deadlines. (occasional)

Short periods of intense concentration while preparing reports and statistics. (occasional)

Visual/Auditory Effort:

Focus on a variety of source data and VDT for short periods. (occasional)

Work Environment:

Office.

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Organize and prioritize work.

Understand and apply the techniques related to social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Working level knowledge of current City word processing, spreadsheet and related specialty software.

Prepare reports and make presentations.

Facilitate meetings and workshops.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Represent the City to the public and outside agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

University undergraduate degree in public administration, environmental studies, urban planning or related field. (4 years).

Experience:

3 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER:

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
