Westhills Presents: Ray Oldenburg

May 29 2008 - 3:00pm
May 29 2008 - 5:00pm

Author Ray Oldenburg, Ph.D. is a professor of Sociology at the University of West Florida and the author of "The Great Good Place" and "Celebrating the Third Place".

Ray understands thriving communities. "Community" is so much more than a gathering of homes and yet that term is shouted at us from real estate ads everywhere. Community happens best when neighborhoods are designed to foster happenstance human contact. We don't plan for or encourage happenstance contact anymore. We plan for efficiency; drive, park, in and out, check that off the list. The mere idea of lingering seems almost fanciful and wasteful in light of today's high-wire lifestyles. And yet it is that very lingering in our own neighborhoods that bonds people of all ages together into a community.
