Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design with Nature - Transformation Lecture Series
TRANSFORMATIONAL LECTURE SERIES
Building a Future for 2030
Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design with Nature
Doug Farr, Founding Principal, Farr Associates
Doug will discuss the techniques and metrics of sustainable urbanism, a concept that is gaining wide international acceptance as a pattern of settlement superior to today’s climate changing sprawl.
Defined in Doug’s new book Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design with Nature as walkable, transit-served urbanism integrated with high performance buildings and infrastructure, this sustainable reform is the subject of a national campaign to become the dominant pattern of development in the US by 2030. To achieve this ambitious goal requires overcoming the widespread professional illiteracy about the near-universal rules of thumb for designing the human and natural systems underlying sustainable settlements.
Doug is the founding principal of Farr Associates, an architecture and planning firm regarded by many as one of the most sustainable design practices in the country. Having a mission to create sustainable human environments, Farr Associate’s unique niche is in applying the principles of LEED at the scale of the neighbourhood and in designing green buildings exclusively for urban contexts.

INSPIRE. MOTIVATE. TRANSFORM.
The TRANSFORMATIONAL LECTURE SERIES aims to inspire all building industry professionals to embrace their role in creating a sustainable built environment now, as well as ensuring that sustainability becomes integral to all development in the future. By reminding us why we must act boldly and helping us to imagine a world where sustainability is the baseline, these lectures promise to inspire a revolution!
The series is inspired by and has evolved from Seattle’s long-successful and engaging urban Sustainability Forum.
