Summer Institute in Sustainability

Designed for sustainability managers, strategic planners and policy
makers, the UBC/UW Summer Institute in Sustainability explores how to
implement sustainability as a core value in organizations. Engaging speakers cover a range of issues so you come away with a broad understanding of key concepts and strategies related to sustainability.

This
is your opportunity to delve deeply into sustainability issues with
experts from academia, government and industry. The Institute takes
place over five days and an evening at the UBC Point Grey campus in

Peter Robinson, CEO, David Suzuki Foundation

Peter Robinson, CEO, David Suzuki Foundation
Peter Robinson is the Chief Executive Officer of the David Suzuki
Foundation, Canada’s most trusted voice on matters of science and the
environment. Peter has a long history of humanitarian work, including
monitoring prison conditions with the International Red Cross in Rwanda
in 1998. An outdoors enthusiast, he spends as much time as he can in
the Coast Mountains, or kayaking among the Gulf Islands.

 

Charlene Easton, Director, UBC Sustainability Office

Charlene Easton, Director, UBC Sustainability Office
Charlene Easton has a 25-year history in sustainability innovation and
leadership in Canada and around the world and leads UBC’s
sustainability initiatives. She has applied sustainability projects
across a broad range of sectors including municipalities, corporations,
communities and educational institutions.

 

Professor James Tansey, UBC Sauder School of Business

Dr. James Tansey, Assistant Professor, Chair in Business Ethics,
UBC Sauder School of Business

James Tansey is jointly appointed between the Sauder School of Business
and the W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics at UBC. James’
research activities include social enterprise, climate change the
social impacts and acceptability of new technologies. James is Managing
Editor of the journal Integrated Assessment and founder of a Canadian carbon offset entity called offsetters.com

 

Mike Harcourt, Premier of British Columbia 1991 - 1996

Michael Harcourt, Premier of British Columbia 1991 - 1996
Michael Harcourt served as British Columbia’s Premier from 1991 – 1996
and Mayor of Vancouver from 1980 – 1986. He is a passionate believer in
the power of cities and communities to improve the human condition. In
2005, Michael Harcourt was honoured to receive the Woodrow Wilson Award
for Public Service and in 2006 was awarded the Canadian Urban
Institute’s Jane Jacobs Lifetime Achievement Award.

 

Kurt Grimm, Professor, UBC Faculty of Science

Dr. Kurt Grimm, Associate Professor, Earth and Ocean Sciences, UBC Faculty of Science
Kurt Grimm is an associate professor in the Department of Earth and
Ocean Sciences at UBC. His research in Earth history, paleoecology and
paleoenvironmental reconstruction has developed into new theories about
the emerging sustainability sciences. Specifically, Kurt’s interests
are unified in a single concept -- complexity is simple, not
complicated.
