The course is focused around five areas of green design, based on the LEED building rating system:
As a complement to the workshop, Light House’s May and June Guest Experts will be speaking on topics related to each of these five categories.
On Saturday June 2nd from 2-4pm, Sophia Kelly will speak about Renewable Energy Technologies for Homes (category #5)
Sophia Kelly, Vancouver Renewable Energy Co-op
Sophia Kelly will explain in lay terms renewable energy technologies that can be used to retrofit existing homes (or incorporated into new ones) including photovoltaic (solar electric) systems, solar domestic water heating systems, and solar air (space heating) systems. These systems reduce a building's carbon footprint by providing sustainably generated electricity or heat. She will cover how to determine whether your home is suitable for a renewable energy retrofit or new installation and what types of systems might work best for specific types of situations.
Bio - Sophia is cofounder of VREC (Vancouver Renewable Energy Co-op). She completed coursework in solar photovoltaic system design at BCIT and was on the Board of Directors of the Waterfront Consumers Cooperative for several years. A socially responsible eco-entrepreneur for many years, she began her entrepreneurial career in 1990 as founder and owner of Environmentally Friendly, one of the first ecologically responsible janitorial companies in Vancouver. She developed and taught environmental education to school children all over BC while working for the Association for the Promotion and Advancement of Science Education.
