Mother's Day Organic Blueberry Plant Sale

May 13 2007 - 10:00am
May 13 2007 - 3:00pm

Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows, BC. Corky Evans, NDP Agriculture Critic; Michael Sather, MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows; Joe Foy from the Western Canada Wilderness Committee; Donna Passmore from the Fraser Valley Conservation Coalition and others will speak between 1 and 2 PM at Formosa Nursery on Mother’s Day, this Sunday, May 13th.

Ting Wu and Risa Lin, whose land at Formosa Nursery has been appropriated to build the Abernethy Connector highway, part of the Golden Ears Bridge project, have decided to continue to farm. This Sunday’s Organic Blueberry plant sale is being held in honour of Ting’s mother who started Formosa Farm thirty years ago from thousands of cuttings she collected from other farmers.

Visitors to the farm can also talk to farmers and experts about how to grow and care for their blueberry plants. There will be music, face painting, delicious organic blueberry muffins, and “Hope” hats and T-shirts for sale.

“We are celebrating Ting and Risa’s courageous spirit and dedication to the land,” said Joe Foy of the Wilderness Committee. “It’s going to be a fun family event, and a wonderful opportunity to meet and support a farm family that believes in farming for the long haul, despite the hardships and challenges of our fast-growing region.”

“People wonder what they can do to help global warming,” said Spring Gillard, local author and member of the Vancouver Food Policy Council. “By buying local produce instead of imported produce, or shopping at a farm or a farmers’ market, you are supporting our local farming economy. That cuts down on greenhouse gases by cutting down on the miles that your food travels. It is something easy that anyone can do and it makes a difference.”

If you care about the preservation of farmland, if you want to support farmers, if you believe in buying, eating and growing locally, then bring your mother to Formosa Nursery on Sunday.
