Kerly Acosta: Guest Expert
Throughout May and June, Light House Sustainable Building Centre is offering a non-technical “Green Building 101” for homeowners, strata-dwellers and anyone else interested in learning how to “green” their home! For more information or to register, click here.
The course is focused around five areas of green design, based on the LEED building rating system:
1. Conservation of materials and resources
2. Indoor environmental air quality
3. Water and water efficiency
4. Site planning
5. Energy efficiency and renewable energy
As a complement to the workshop, Light House’s May and June Guest Experts will be speaking on topics related to each of these five categories.
On Saturday May 26th from 2-4pm, Kerly Acosta will speak and answer questions about green roof technology and how they relate to category #4:
Kerly will speak about how green roofs or living roofs provide a natural solution to current urban environmental problems. She will present a general over view about green roof applications which includes an introduction to the historical and global case studies, types, benefits, and barriers of the implementation of green roofs. As well as a quick glance at CAGRT’s first year research results from our two main research areas of green roofs which are thermal efficiency and stormwater management of a building. The second half of the presentation will demonstrate the implementation, define the materials and construction, substrate and plants/planting technology, and some design guidelines used to build the research facility’s green roof.
Bio - Kerly Acosta., from BCIT’s Centre for the Advancement of Green Roof Technology is a mechanical engineer by training with 7 years of experience in industry analyzing emissions related to automotive engines, stationary energy generating technologies and as a researcher in fluid Mechanics. She also has a master’s degree in Sustainability from the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden. Kerly has been involved in modifying the drain pipes of two in-service buildings to measure the storm water runoff from their green roofs. As an emerging researcher, Kerly’s research areas of interest are in analysis and modeling the air quality, stormwater and thermal efficiency of green roofs.
