"Organic Gardening at Home"

Kendra Hope and Emma Baker, Society for Organic Urban Land Care (SOUL)

Kendra and Emma will discuss basic principles of organic gardening for home owners and offer plenty of good tips and advice to gardeners for healthy, happy plants. They will also speak about soil which is the foundation of a chemical-free garden, as well as lawns and how they can easily and successfully be maintained organically.

Bios - Emma Is the Manager of Green By Nature Organic Landscaping and is a SOUL Organic Master Gardener. She studied Conservation Biology at the University of Aberdeen before moving to Canada in 2005 ; she has been working as a professional landscaper in Vancouver for the past 3 years.

Kendra worked as a supervisor and the head gardener on Granville Island for 6 years, for the company Mainland Landscaping & Gardening. Granville Island’s grounds are organically maintained, using no chemicals of any kind. Kendra is also a landscape designer, and is now working with Emma at Green By Nature, contributing her organic gardening and ecological design skills.

Both are now also working with the Vancouver-based landscaping company Western Weed and Tree Care, a well-known pesticide application company that has been spaying in large quantities for 30 years. They are working with the new owners of the company to transition their practices to more ecologically-friendly methods, in the hopes of demonstrating to commercial pesticide users that there are successful alternatives.

About SOUL - SOUL is an organization dedicated to helping communities make the transition away from harmful and unsustainable chemical landscaping and gardening practices. Courses and Educational programs are offered by SOUL, including the Organic Master Gardener course. Professionals wishing to offer “organic” landscaping services must adhere to the standards set by SOUL, and can also apply to become ‘certified organic’ practitioners through the organization.
