James Glave - Guest Expert on Green Building
"The Saga of the Eco-Shed"

James Glave, Author of Almost Green
In
late 2006, former Outside magazine
senior editor James Glave decided to teach himself the nuts and bolts of
sustainable design by building a "deep-green" studio in the front
yard of his home on Bowen Island. He's since done exactly that, creating a
modern, highly-efficient 260-square-foot passive-solar building out of
sustainably-sourced lumber. Along the way, he not only gave himself a
crash-course in green-building technologies and strategies, but also wrestled
with time, money, and the complicated personal entanglements of our
carbon-intensive world. Join Glave for an accessible and entertaining
presentation, as he shares the small victories and difficult truths he
encountered along the way. The project will be the focus of Almost Green (Greystone/Skyhorse),
Glave's first book, to be released across North America this fall.
Bio - James Glave
may not have many letters after his name, but he has a knack for stringing them
together. A former staff editor with both Wired News and Outside magazine,
Glave has spent much of his 17-year journalism career deciphering jargon,
telling stories, and making obtuse and arcane subjects accessible and
entertaining. In 2006, he decided to combine his passion for sustainability
with his interest in construction and architecture by building the Eco-Shed — a
deep-green writing studio — in his front yard on Bowen Island. This fall, he will
share the madcap story of the Eco-Shed in Almost
Green (Douglas & McIntyre/Skyhorse), which will be published across
Canada and the United States.
