Retrofitting Communities for Sustainability: Community Building

“Build something that no one can touch, yet everyone can sense.

Build something that is priceless yet can’t be bought or sold.

Build community.”

Background: Do you ever worry about how much time we each spend being “entertained” by technology and strangers? Tired of driving the kids to play dates and sports games but don’t know how to get them active otherwise? Are you concerned about global climate change but don’t know how you can possibly make a difference in your little house or apartment? Do you worry that you are the only one who cares about these things?

The Challenge: What if your community was so safe, accessible, beautiful, interesting, unpolluted, and so full of the services and resources you needed on a daily basis that you rarely needed to leave it? What if you knew most people by name and felt you could rely on them for help when needed? What would such a community look and feel like? How can we help create these sorts of places?

The Presentation: Based on travels to eco-villages and co-housing, living in community, 20 years as an urban planner, and helping to build community on her own street (featured in Focus on Women, Canadian Parent and the TC), Angela Evans presents a host of simple actions that just about anyone can undertake on their own street, old or new. You will go home with a list of creative ideas, and you will meet others who want to build community as well.

Target Audience: Suitable for neighbourhood groups, groups of neighbours (not always the same thing!), sustainability study groups, community activists and volunteers, or anyone wanting to know how to improve their quality of life very, very locally. Children are most welcome but those under about 9 years old may not find it engaging.

Date & Time: Saturday, April 19th, 2008. 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Cost: $25 at the door (children under 9 years old are free, 9-15 years are $8)
