"Sustainable Materials and Green Building Practices"

Doug Rempel

Doug Rempel, Residential Energy Specialist, Homeworks Services Inc.

Are you planning to build an energy-efficient home? Or, are you interested in learning how to incorporate green technology in your home renovation? If the answer is yes to one of these questions, then you’ll want to join, Doug Rempel, a residential energy specialist for Homeworks Services Inc. (Homeworks), at Light House Sustainable Building Centre on Sunday, February 14th, 2010.

In brief, the focus of Doug’s presentation will be to outline the use of sustainable materials and “green” building practices in your home. Also, he will touch on why you should consider incorporating the house-as-a-system approach when you are undergoing renovations. In particular, Doug will draw upon his experience of building an “off the grid” home on Lilloet Lake. This presentation will serve as a forum for people to ask questions on sustainability and green building. For more information, Homeworks has an online blog called: “Going Green Off The Grid” where we’re tracking the progress on this project. You can view the blog at: http://www.homeworks.ca/projects

Bio - Doug Rempel has over 30 years experience in building science and the house-as-a-system approach to energy-efficient home renovations. . In 1979, Doug worked on the first airtight house in BC, where the first heat recovery ventilation system was installed. During that project, Doug provided guidance on the installation of an air tight woodstove which took combustion air from the home to outside. This was a brand new concept then, but one that would eventually be a key factor in creating a more comfortable, healthy and energy efficient home.

Doug is a certified R-2000 builder and had his own R-2000 home built in 1982 which was monitored by BC Hydro, National Research Council and the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources for energy consumption and indoor air quality for the next fifteen years. Currently, this 3000 sq. ft. home in North Burnaby is heated for less than $864.00 per year or $72.00 per month.

Doug was also involved in the sale and installation of the first geothermal system in Vancouver. During that time, he became a leader in residential geothermal heating and completed the installation of the much publicized geothermal system for ‘home improvement guru’, Shell Busey. Over the years, Doug has appeared on CBC reality TV series, Code Green, which offered Canadian homeowners valuable information on how to reduce energy consumption in their homes.
