What is an enterprising non-profit?

For non-profits and charities, operating an enterprise is nothing new. Museums and art galleries have operated gift shops as a way to generate revenue to support their exhibits and promote art. However, with global issues such as climate change requiring a more concerted response, conventional funding programs are become increasingly over-subscribed. Social enterprise is now more popular than ever as a means to effectively and responsively deliver programs and solutions.

In Canada, the Enterprising Non Profits program helps to support all different kinds of social enterprise including Light House. Other local social enterprises include:
SmartGrowth BC
CityGreen Solutions
Habitat for Humanity’s Restore building supply outlets
The Pembina Foundation

How does Light House work as a social enterprise?

In 2007, Light House generated approximately 24% of operational costs from a combination of business activities that are filtered for their ability to empower and catalyze BC’s real estate and construction industry.
