Project Summary

Canuck Place is Canada’s only dedicated provider of palliative and supportive care for children with life-threatening illness. Via a comprehensive integrated design process comprising a project visioning workshop and six user group engagements, and a Post Occupancy Evaluation and building audit of existing Vancouver facilities, Light House prepared a suite of design guidelines to communicate the functional, technical, cultural and family needs and criteria for the proposed Abbotsford project. This work included a detailed analysis of the residential and healthcare functions and adjacencies, while recording the evocative spirit of Canuck Place. The new Canuck Place in Abbotsford, a 24,000 square foot facility, will provide 10-childrens’ beds, 5 family suites and related support services. The new Abbotsford location will meet the growing demand for the Canuck Place program and make it available closer to home for many BC children and families in the Fraser Valley and Interior, lessening their need for travel.
