Market Insights welcomes experts in the field to speak to issues of consequence to the BC green building market. This quarter Roger Bayley will speak about the Olympic Village development at Southeast False Creek.

Roger Bayley

Guest Speaker: Roger Bayley, P.Eng, Principal, Merrick Architecture

Roger Bayley is principal of Merrick Architecture, which he co founded in 1984 with Principal Paul Merrick. Roger is currently responsible as the Design Manager for Vancouver’s Olympic Village development, Millennium Water. This clearly defined role within the project’s architectural contract addresses the coordination of the 150-plus consultant team across all aspects of the project.

Roger prepared and wrote the original RFP submission for the Olympic Village on behalf of the developer, Millennium SEFC Properties Limited, including assembly of the consultant team, the scope of work proposed, and the scheduling and program definition. This 300-page program document has defined the evolution of the project since its award in April 2006 and continues to provide the framework for the coordination of the consultant teams and two major contractors. Roger has also been instrumental in addressing the concerns and demands of the City of Vancouver Planning and Permitting team, the sustainability objectives, client coordination and requirements of The Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee’s 2010 ‘overlay’ and operational program – that will see the housing of 2800 athletes for the 2010 games.

Roger has managed and directed Merrick Architecture since its inception and provides project definition, value engineering, quality control, resource management and project scheduling. His role includes the management of staff and the coordination of the Consultants being used by the Firm. His background in structural engineering and construction management are highly valued in the design process and he has been instrumental in establishing new cooperative approaches to the development of projects and the management of capital expenditures. He has worked extensively in the coordination of multi-disciplinary teams for engineering, construction management, architectural and restoration projects. His most recognized contribution focuses around the balancing of Design achievement with the pragmatics of technical excellence and project budgeting.
